ADULT NOVELS, CHILD PROTAGONISTS

  1. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Kind of twee, and not an especially believable 8-year-old, but those are the risks you run in this category.
  2. Vaclav and Lena
  3. The Invisible Circus
  4. David Copperfield
    It's not about the magician.
  5. All the Light We Cannot See
  6. Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?
I remembered this as having a child narrator, but when I looked it up just now I was reminded it's actually a disillusioned middle-aged woman looking back on a significant adolescent friendship. But I'm keeping it on the list because that almost counts, and because for all the cult love that comes Lorrie Moore's way I think this book remains unjustly neglected.
  7. The Bluest Eye
  8. A History of Luminous Motion
Dark stuff, like a hyperliterate version of "The Bad Seed."
  9. Pobby and Dingan
  10. JR
  11. Monkeys
  12. The Virgin Suicides
  13. Housekeeping
  14. The Goldfinch
  15. Anywhere but Here
  16. The Everlasting Story of Nory
  17. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time
