I expect this list will be highly controversial and generate a lot of chatter in the equine literary circle.
  1. Misty of Chincoteague (Marguerite Henry)
    7712af6d 6e28 4efa 9b3e 6d6871d6b25c
"But Stacy, this is cheating, she's a real horse," I'm sure you're thinking, because like me you read this book 22 times and wanted to go to Chincoteague on the last Wednesday in July for the annual Pony Swim where you would adopt your very own Chincoteague pony, but the book based on her life is made up. The fictional Misty taught two children about entrepreneurship and overcoming obstacles!
  2. Black Beauty (Anna Sewell)
    266b84aa 5bb3 4c68 9d83 693bf4f2dda3
How many horses do you know that have an autobiography? Is it NONE? You don't know very many exceptional horses, then. Black Beauty is one of the most beloved horses of ALL TIME. Respect.
  3. The Black Stallion (Walter Farley)
    84646862 a174 424c 8154 d327e6db11c1
Survives being SHIPWRECKED on a DESERTED ISLAND and goes on to be the greatest racehorse of his time DON'T EVEN COME AT ME LIKE THAT'S NOT COOL
  4. Shadowfax (J.R.R. Tolkien)
    D5fd6257 564f 4d11 84f8 d0cdfe609da8
THE LORD OF ALL HORSES I'M NOT EVEN SHITTING YOU
  5. Ginger (A. Sewell)
    197a2f1c 5623 4395 bfab 8bd30175df85
Black Beauty's salty bestie who DIES and it's HEARTBREAKING and TAUGHT ME ABOUT LOSS AND HOW HARD LIFE IS.
  6. Stormy, Misty's Foal (M. Henry)
    7ddd6203 c899 4ae8 8dff 21883270041a
Another real horse I am including on this list because her life was mostly fictionalized in her eponymous book. She was born during a storm!!!
  7. Satan (W. Farley)
    34d08b26 9da1 4e17 907d ae05156591a1
Son of the Black Stallion. His name is SATAN for God's sake do you think he was cuddly and lovable? No, he was not, but he did prove that you shouldn't give up on something just because it's difficult.
  8. Bree (C.S. Lewis)
    B72af4e7 b192 4f14 84dd 3dc7d0d0d8b3
Helps his boy escape from indentured servitude, so yeah, BREE'S PRETTY RAD. (This is from The Horse and His Boy, definitely the least appreciated of the Narnia series, but the very first one I ever read only because it had the word horse in the title)
  9. Sea Star, Orphan of Chincoteague (M. Henry)
    A1dc2995 2879 4a00 98ef 04b07e83b612
By now you're picking up on the fact that I had a very long Chincoteague phase. Didn't everyone?
  10. Merrylegs (A. Sewell)
    0efd07fd 691b 46e1 a61a b0cf5c64ddab
An adorable sidekick who comes into Black Beauty's life for a spell. Beloved by humans and animals alike because he's FUCKING ADORABLE.
  11. All of the horses in the Thoroughbreds series (Joanna Campbell)
    7f7f7cfb e0d0 4573 bcf5 c30659a5a8a7
I didn't read this entire series (there were 94 books!!!) but I read a LOT of them and ALL of the horses were so great. Special shoutouts to Wonder, Sterling Dream, and Wonder's Star.
