My dad would have been 67 today. He wouldn't want me to tell you what got him...but he was only 61 when it happened.
- •His sense of humorDry wit. He was the master of it. Also? Also a bowling master. His bowling buddies recently recalled a time when my dad was at the alley and someone accidentally spilled their beer all over his bowling bag and shoes. My dad got up, poured the beer from his shoes into the trash and said nothing. The beer was replaced. My dad picked up the beer, looked at the spiller and asked one question: "Where's your stuff?"
- •His cooking skillsHe wasn't a chef or anything close. But the way he gruffly shouted "perfect!" whenever he took a frozen pizza out of the oven...you knew he was right.
- •His silenceMy dad was not a big talker. My friends told me they weren't sure if he ever said more than "hello" to them during my childhood and beyond. But man, that taught me to enjoy sitting with someone and not forcing conversation. And also how to observe everything around me. Maybe someday I will pluck a kid outta the pool when she falls in when no one else was watching just like he did.
