Movies I Watched This Week

  1. Loving
This was such a gorgeous film. Quiet and lovely, it never shifted away from the intimate humanity of the love story even alongside the large scale civil rights movement. It could have so easily shifted to a sweeping courtroom drama, but it stayed a story about love and family.
  2. Manchester by the Sea
Currently competing with Moonlight for my favorite movie of the year. I wish Affleck's asshole behavior hadn't cast a slight shadow over praising this, but leaving him out of it....such a shockingly real portrait of grief. No one writes real people like Kenneth Lonergan. Honest and naturalistic and at times brutally sad. I'm honestly a little bummed Viola Davis is submitting for Supporting. I'm sure she'll deserve her win, but Michelle Williams absolutely gutted me in very few scenes
