  1. There will always be one Kanye West song that resonates with me.
The first time I heard this song, I found truth in the lyrics. The conviction in his voice combined with story itself moves me. The song is as relevant today as it was in 2004 when it was released.
  2. It took him six months to write the second verse.
I cannot imagine putting that much time and contemplation into a single verse of a song. Devoting six months of your time, energy, effort, and frustration into one verse of a song says so much about how important that song is to him as an artist.
  3. There were three versions of the music video.
The first video did not meet Kanye's expectations, so he paid for a second and third video out of his own pocket. Again, this tells me how much this particular song means to him.
  4. The song is from his debut album.
Maybe part of what touches me so much about the whole back story with this song is that this song is from a debut album. This wasn't an established artist who could be picky about concepts or drag his feet when something wasn't going his way. This was an artist trying to be true to his vision. I think that is what I have always respected about Kanye.
  5. There is one particular part in the second verse that just punches me in the gut every time I hear it.
If I ever doubted his dedication to this song, there is a part in the second verse that erases all my doubt "They say you can rap about anything except for Jesus...That means guns, sex, lies, video tapes...But if I talk about God my record won't get played. Huh? ...Well if this take away from my spins...Which will probably take away from my ends...Then I hope this take away from my sins...And bring the day that I'm dreaming about...Next time I'm in the club everybody screaming out...Jesus Walks"
  6. Take from the song what you will.
There is a story there. It is a song about faith. It's a song about an artist with a vision. Whatever you take away from the song, it's a pretty great fucking song.
  7. Without further ado...Jesus Walks
