SONGS AND THE MOMENTS THEY TAKE ME BACK TO

  1. In My Life - The Beatles
Miss Anna's class, 2001-2004. Singing alongside the other first and second graders to the graduating third graders and being sung to at my own third grade graduation.
  2. Sadie Hawkins Dance - Relient K
Eighth grade. My friends and I choreographed an interpretive dance that we liked to perform during our walks outside.
  3. The Pretender - Jackson Browne
2008. In a rare display of emotion, my dad sent me this song and told me to never let anyone steal my dreams.
  4. Hello Hurricane - Switchfoot
Creation fest 2010. In the pit with Lauren and 36463836373 other people. Getting chilly bumps on a hot summer night from the sound of the crowd singing the opening melody.
  5. Girl Named Tennessee - NEEDTOBREATHE
2011. Filming the music video. Leaning on the piano Bear Rinehart was playing in Dale Earnhardt Jr's faux saloon.
  6. A Place Only You Can Go - NEEDTOBREATHE
Charleston Pour House, Summer 2011. Pretty sure it was the hottest/humidest day ever in the history of the earth. Pressed up against the stage in front of Bo Rinehart in a tiny bar that had no ac or fans with my BFF and youth pastor, drenched in the sweat of god knows how many people. At the end of the show, they played this song for the first time completely unplugged and as a medley with Stand By Me.
  7. Beautiful Things - Gungor
Ghosts Upon the Earth tour, First UMC, 2012. The most spiritual experience of my life.
  8. The One - Backstreet Boys
August 2013. One of the last songs they played (and my all time fave). Standing on the railing with Chloe and Luis and screaming along to every word.
  9. Sin Wagon - The Dixie Chicks
Mexican restaurant in Rock Thrill, Fall 2013. Doing karaoke for the first and only time in my life - I don't think I could ever live up to that performance, ever.
  10. Family - Matt Wertz
A Friday in Spring 2014. Driving home from my general chemistry final exam, picking up a phone call from my neurosurgeon, finding out I was to have another spinal fusion. Fighting back the sudden urge to vomit. Pulling the car over and sobbing uncontrollably. Meeting my parents at a mexican restaurant, tearily ordering a shirley temple, and the waiter bringing me an entire cup of maraschino cherries.
  11. IDFWU - Big Sean
Every single interaction I ever had with my manager at the last retail store I worked at.
  12. All of Me (Jazz Standard)
Strasbourg, France, summer of 2015. Taking a wrong turn down a side street after dinner. Encountering nobody but a group of old men playing jazz under a streetlamp. Wishing I could stay in that moment forever.
  13. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
A glorious September night on Montford Drive, one of the first Friday nights of senior year. Drinking at a picnic table outside at Angry Ale's with girls I met freshman year but had never really hung out with. Mutually agreeing that we should've formed this friendship way earlier. Every single person belting every word of the chorus at the top of their lungs. Feeling like I was exactly where I was supposed to be at that very moment.
  14. Begin Again - Taylor Swift
Cliché moment. Thanksgiving break 2015. Doing something out of character. Spending five hours at a French café with a complete stranger (who I will probably never see again). Talking about anything and everything. Thinking I might not be entirely hopeless when it comes to men.
  15. Shut Up and Dance With Me - Walk the Moon
Senior ball, February 2016. Being legitimately drunk for the first time in my life. Tearing up the dance floor in heels for three hours straight. Feeling like I was exactly where I was supposed to be at that very moment. Not giving a single fuck.
