MY FAVORITE MOVIES FROM EACH YEAR I'VE BEEN ALIVE

Inspired by @americson (Sentimental picks, not necessarily the "best" film of each year)
  1. (1982) E.T. the extra-terrestrial
My parents took me to see this with them when I was 3 months old. It later became the movie that made me fall in love with movies.
  2. (1983) The Outsiders
Growing up poor white trash in rural Texas like I did, this book and movie meant so much.
  3. (1984) Ghostbusters
The most difficult year to choose from. Runners-up: Gremlins, This Is Spinal Tap, The Terminator, The Karate Kid, Sixteen Candles.
  4. (1985) The Breakfast Club
Most-watched movie of my life. Close runner-up: Back to the Future.
  5. (1986) Big Trouble In Little China
    The Jack Burton guarantee.
  6. (1987) The Lost Boys
    Remains my favorite vampire movie.
  7. (1988) Die Hard
"Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs..."
  8. (1989) Christmas Vacation
"the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse."
  9. (1990) My Blue Heaven
I wish there were 50 more Steve Martin/Ric Moranis comedies.
  10. (1991) Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Surprisingly deep year, but my memory of this looms largest.
  11. (1992) A Few Good Men
To his day it still sucks me in every time I come across it on TV.
  12. (1993) Jurassic Park
Saw it three times on opening day. Saw it in 3D during 20th Anniversary re-release. Have seen it many times in between and loved it every time.
  13. (1994) Leon: The Professional
  14. (1995) The American President
Second Aaron Sorkin/Rob Reiner collaboration on this list. Clueless is a close runner up.
  15. (1996) Scream
I tracked down Kevin Williamson's original screenplay on the Internet and studied it like crazy.
  16. (1997) Grosse Pointe Blank
Plays against sentimental comedy tropes with a dark and quirky sensibility.
  17. (1998) Out of Sight
Sexy, sophisticated, smart, and funny. Runner-up: Rushmore.
  18. (1999) Office Space
My favorite year for movies ever. This endlessly re-watchable comedy never hits a false note. Too many runners-up to list. Probably a separate list to come for that.
  19. (2000) Best In Show
The apex of Christopher Guest's "mocku-mentery" genre. The underlying sweetness and honesty elevates it beyond mocking.
  20. (2001) The Royal Tenenbaums
Again I find myself appreciating a brilliant mix cynicism, whimsy, and heart.
  21. (2002) Chicago
    A flawless movie musical.
  22. (2003) Love Actually
I'm just a sucker for it. No shame.
  23. (2004) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Hurts how relevant this movie is in my life currently.
  24. (2005) Serenity
I'm a biased Joss Whedon super fan but still love this movie so much.
  25. (2006) Casino Royale
The move is reboot crazy, but this defacto James Bond restart ranks very high in my esteem.
  26. (2007) The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters
    Love a good underdog story.
  27. (2008) In Bruges
    Wickedly funny and profane.
  28. (2009) The Hangover
Forget about the sequels, I will never forget how much O laughed and laughed the first several times I watched this.
  29. (2010) Scott Pilgrim vs The World
    A frenzy of glorious geekery.
  30. (2011) Captain America: The First Avenger
The best origin story in the MCU.
  31. (2012) Marvel's The Avengers
Like a kid in a Candy store.
  32. (2013) The Way Way Back
    Funny and honest.
  33. (2014) Whiplash
    A fascinating battle of wills.
  34. (2015) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Lived up to and went beyond all expectations.
