Some Favorite Books & Articles About Porn

I read a lot of these for my book Unclean Lips. If you want to read my own writing on porn, I did a profile of James Deen a few years ago that I'm proud of: http://bit.ly/1EoOTs2
  1. Gay Talese, Thy Neighbor's Wife.
The opening and closing scenes are absolutely bravura works of new journalism.
  2. Linda Williams, Hard Core.
There are some mistakes, but this is a crucial book; in many ways the beginning of porn studies. And her main point is a killer: the animating dream of pornography, as a genre, is to visually represent something that is frustratingly invisible: female pleasure.
  3. Shalom Auslander, "My Hard-Core Obsession." http://gqm.ag/1ImUWZ3
A terrific GQ article about disgust and desire and a pornographer in jail, by a sharp novelist and memoirist.
  4. Whitney Strub, Perversion for Profit.
If you want to know why there are *still* people in jail in this country for disseminating pornography, Strub breaks it down. A really solid postwar history.
  5. Walter Kendrik, The Secret Museum.
His key point: the history of "pornography" has always been defined by the fear elite white men have about their erotica getting into the hands of women, poor people, and people not-like-us.
