+women Short Story Writers Who Should Be at Least 10x More Widely Read+

If we're into, say, Alice Munro, Grace Paley, and Annie Proulx (and we are, right?), who else should we be reading? New, old, whatever.
  1. Cynthia Ozick.
Seems like lots of people have heard of Ozick, but are people actually reading her? Possibly the greatest prose stylist in English ever. Not for nothing did David Foster Wallace put her in his overall top 3. And the essays are maybe even better than the stories.
  2. Ottessa Moshfegh.
Brand-new and kicking ass out of the gate, with a lot of support from The Paris Review. "Bettering Myself" and "Disgust" suggest impressive range, skills.
  3. Edith Pearlman.
Holy hell she's good. I came to her late, only recently, but goddamn. Godolphin is realer to me now than Brookline.
  4. Ayelet Tsabari.
Just won the $100,000 Sami Rohr Prize, but hasn't been published in the US yet. She's a Yemeni-Israeli-Canadian writing about strong Mizrahi women. Random House just signed her to a 3-book deal.
  5. Suggest more, please. I hear good things about Rebecca Lee and Rebecca Curtis, but haven't gotten to either of them yet.

  11. Susan Daitch.
In 1993 she was included alongside DFW and William Vollman in an issue of The Review of Contemporary Fiction, but hasn't gotten her due lately. A great experimentalist interested in history, media.

She reviewed the latest Edith Pearlman for the NYTBR, and her 2013 collection "The Isle of Youth" is great.

Sorry to keep circling back to this list but sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night on dog daddy duty and think, "How could I have forgotten..."
