Number of Completely Original Movies in Top 20 U.S. Grossing Films Per Year

By "original," I mean not sequel or prequel or spinoff or remake, not based on a tv show or Broadway show or book or article or comic or toy or video game or ride - essentially, an idea that was "originally" intended to be a film - and therefore no guaranteed built-in audience. (Number in parentheses is how many made the top 10)

  2. 2015: 3 (1)
INSIDE OUT (#4) barely counts because it's Disney AND Pixar. And barely sneaking in are STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (#19) and SAN ANDREAS (#20). If you didn't know, Home (#15) was based on the book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.
  3. 2014: 3 (0)
INSTERSTELLAR (#15) is solid. And sneaking in again are two comedies this time: NEIGHBORS (#19) and RIDE ALONG (#20).

INCEPTION (#6), DESPICABLE ME (#7), MEGAMIND (#17), THE KING'S SPEECH (#18). I debated about taking biopics and true stories out, but decided to leave them in because most are based on books. The King's Speech was made for movie only, which should count for a lot.

RATATOUILLE (#11) - Pixar again! WILD HOGS (#13), KNOCKED UP (#14), JUNO (#15), ENCHANTED (#20) - which is arguably based on every fairy tale combined, but it still original. Apparently American Gangster (#19) was based on an article.

CARS (#3), HAPPY FEET (#7), TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY (#12), CLICK (#13), THE BREAK-UP (#18). The Departed #15) is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs. Borat (#16) was originally a character on Da Ali G Show.

  16. 2001: 4 (2)
MONSTERS INC. (#4), PEARL HARBOR (#7), THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (#14), SPY KIDS (#17) - four may seem low considering the trend, but let me say that #21-26 were all original, for what it's worth.
