Top 34 Sports Movies of All Time

  1. 1.
    The Hustler
"Fast" Eddie Felson and his high-stakes match against "Minnesota Fats" has to be one of the best pieces of cinema ever made, let alone sports movies.
  2. 2.
    Raging Bull
The slow motion, the black and white, the boxing and flashing lights... I could have been a contender. It's about as artistic as this sport will ever be, and quite possibly the best Scorcese film (imho).
  3. 3.
    Rocky
It still astounds me sometimes that this character and script came from Stallone himself.
  4. 4.
    The Natural
The book was amazing, the adaptation was incredible, and the final homerun was pure magic.
  5. 5.
    The Sandlot
It's the "Stand By Me" of baseball films. Plus this quote: Heroes get remembered but legends never die.
  6. 6.
    Field of Dreams
It's Kevin Costner at his height and he's unstoppable here.
  7. 7.
    Major League
Wild thing... I think I love you. Also, my friend was one of the kids in Major League II (which doesn't make the list).
  8. 8.
    Bull Durham
Crash Quote: How come in former lifetimes, everybody is someone famous? I mean, how come nobody ever says they were Joe Schmo?
  9. 9.
    The Karate Kid
Ralph Macchio was pretty much what I aspired to be from the age of 5-10 years old. I took years of martial arts... how come I don't remember any of it?
  10. 10.
    Murderball
Before this doc I had little idea that quadriplegics in the U.S. and Canada had a blood rivalry in a sport aptly named "Murderball." By the end I was completely immersed in this world.
  11. 11.
    Hoop Dreams
It's the classic documentary that follows inner-city youth as the try to become professional basketball players. It has one of the most poignant and honest endings to any film — really a master work.
  12. 12.
    Rudy
The quintessential sports movie cliché, except that it invented all them. Coach quote: I wish God would put your heart in some of my players bodies.
  13. 13.
    Million Dollar Baby
The mentor relationship between Eastwood and Swank is pitch perfect in this fantastic boxing film.
  14. 14.
    Slap Shot
Paul Newman. Big brawls on ice. Missing teeth. This is hockey at its toughest.
  15. 15.
    Hoosiers
It's the original underdog team sports film.
  16. 16.
    A League of Their Own
One of my favorite movies that empowers women both in front of and behind the screen. And I still listen to "This used to be my playground" by Madonna (and cry).
  17. 17.
    Chariots of Fire
The song, the running, the beach, you can try to fight it, but you probably won't.
  18. 18.
    Bend it Like Beckham
It's infectious great fun about an average girl taking control of her own life, and passes the bechdel test. There are just too few women's sports movies.
  19. 19.
    Jerry Maguire
This movie is endlessly quotable and became a 90s cliché machine.
  20. 20.
    When We Were Kings
The ultimate rope-a-dope boxing showdown and comeback from the man and myth... Muhammad Ali.
  21. 21.
    Shaolin Soccer
Excellent kung fu meets soccer. Seriously, this is a gem.
  22. 22.
    Happy Gilmore
Okay, it's the B+ version of Billy Madison, but it still lands some of my favorite laughs, solidifies Adam Sandler's rise in Hollywood (for better or worse), and happens to be the best golf movie out there. Which either says a lot about this movie or a lot about golf movies (you pick).
  23. 23.
    Prefontaine
I may be alone on this one, but I stand tall. Fave line: Let me tell you something, all of my life people have said to me, you're to small, Pre. You're not fast enough, Pre. Give up your foolish dreams, Steve!
  24. 24.
    Any Given Sunday
I really like Oliver Stone's frenetic eye and editing as a lens for football.
  25. 25.
    Varsity Blues
James Van Der Beek is suddenly a badass and it's kind of great.
  26. 26.
    Bring It On
It's a guilty pleasure. Plus I think I fell for Eliza Dushku when I first saw it (I was a kid then, I grew up).
  27. 27.
    Goon
Totally underrated hockey film that I think is on par with "Slapshot." Seann William Scott is great and completely pulled me in.
  28. 28.
    Cool Runnings
Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! Cool Runnings!
  29. 29.
    The Mighty Ducks
I secretly sung along to "We are the Champions" with all my fellow ducks whenever I saw this one.
  30. 30.
    Moneyball
Peter Brand Quote: Jeremy's about to realize that the ball went 60 feet over the fence. He hit a home run and didn't even realize it.
  31. 31.
    The Big Lebowski (Honorable Mention)
They're bowlers. It's a sport! If this were a comedy movies list it would be top 5.
  32. 32.
    The Bad News Bears
    The original 1976 version (obviously).
  33. 33.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
    What? It's funny.
  34. 34.
    The Replacements
What can I say... I'm a Keanu fan. Of course this made it in.
