High school's the word, it's the word, it's the word...

  1. My job requires me to work high school students from time to time
Not often, but sometimes I get to be at my neighborhood high school (there's only four high schools so it happens once every four times) and when it does here are the things that will happen
  2. First
I'm here so rarely that the front office has no idea who I am. What I do. Why I'm here. EVERY SINGLE time I will have to explain myself introduce myself and spend almost fifteen min with them trying to figure out who the hell I am and where I need to go. Oh and I won't have a bell schedule because they expect everyone to magically know that info
  3. Since they don't know who I am
They also won't have a classroom for me. So I'll end up roaming. One period I'm in the stinky room with the gerbils. The next the office with the loud reception lady who doesn't know who I am
  4. I get to catch up with old friends
Students I haven't seen in four months or more. Teachers I haven't seen in a long time. This campus has been through so much the past few months. We lost a student to suicide. Two weeks later a student was hit walking home from theatre practice and has been in a coma for three weeks. This campus is hurting. They have been in my heart.
  5. My daughters friends and my former students will find me
I don't know how they do it. But no matter where I am they seek me out and say hi and it melts my heart.
  6. My daughter will become needy
It could be a band aid, she might need something from her car and won't have time to get it. She might have forgotten something at home and wants to know can I get it for her during my lunch since our house is across the street?
  7. I will be shocked by at least one inappropriately dressed or behaved kid
I see all kinds of things
  8. I will be shocked by their sensitivity
Sometimes you forget how sweet and sensitive high school kids are
  9. I will get to see the lives shaping up
Kids who didn't do well in middle school have suddenly flourished, kids who didn't speak English are applying for colleges and getting scholarships. Futures are being made
  10. I will get to leave early
    The perks of high school
