The Stevie Nicks List

In honor of her 68th birthday, here are 24 fast facts about, 10 quotes from, and 8 videos of the iconic Stevie Nicks.
  1. FAST FACTS:
  2. Her nickname came from a mispronunciation of her birth name.
Every time she would say Stephanie, it came out as "Tee-dee". Eventually "Tee-dee" became Stevie.
  3. Her paternal grandfather was a country singer who taught her to sing duets by the time she was four.
She's said that he used to stand her up on the counter and she would make a nickel for every song she sang.
  4. She decided she wanted to be a performer after participating in a sixth grade talent show.
Her talent? A tap dancing routine.
  5. Her parents gave her a Goya guitar for her sixteenth birthday.
  6. The first song she ever wrote was called "I've Loved and I've Lost, and I'm Sad But Not Blue."
  7. She and Lindsey Buckingham met while she was a senior and he was a junior at Menlo-Atherton High School.
She overheard him playing The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'" at a party and decided to join in.
  8. She attended San Jose State University with plans to become a teacher.
Her major was Speech Communication, but she dropped out a semester shy of graduating.
  9. Jimi Hendrix once dedicated a song to her.
As members of the band Fritz, she and Lindsey opened for one of Hendrix's shows and the guitar god ended up dedicating a song to her after seeing her standing on the side of the stage. (They also opened for Janis Joplin.)
  10. She spent the last little bit of money she had to purchase a blouse for the cover shoot of Buckingham Nicks only to have Lindsey insist they both go topless.
She says she cried throughout the entire shoot.
  11. Christine McVie ultimately decided her fate in Fleetwood Mac.
The band needed a guitarist and wanted Lindsey to fill the role, but he wouldn't agree to join unless Stevie did, too. The problem, though, was that the band already had a female member. Not one to easily give up, Mick Fleetwood suggested that the two groups meet for lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant with the understanding that Christine had the final say on whether Stevie got to join or not. Luckily, they all got along and both Stevie and Lindsey were invited to join the band.
  12. She wrote "Dreams" in a studio that was reported to have belonged to Sly from Sly and the Family Stone.
After being kicked out of the studio for the day, she ran into an employee who told her he had a key. When she asked where to, he took her to a studio decorated in black and red with a piano in one corner and pit in the middle that held a black velvet covered bed. Climbing onto the bed, she set up her little tape recorder and had "Dreams" written twenty or so minutes later.
  13. She's the writer behind the band's only US number one.
"Dreams" hit the top of the charts on June 18, 1977.
  14. She pitched a fit when the decision was made to bump "Silver Springs" in favor of "I Don't Want to Know" because of time restrictions.
After she got done throwing her fit in the parking lot, though, she gathered herself and went into the studio to cut her part on "I Don't Want to Know".
  15. She started wearing the flowing outfits and platform boots so that she could be seen better by the audience...and also because she needed a wardrobe that was a little more forgiving than blue jeans.
She gained ten pounds on the first Fleetwood Mac tour which meant that by the time she got home, almost none of her clothing fit.
  16. Rumors of her being a witch caused her to stop wearing black clothing for a bit in the '80s.
  17. She was 33 before she cut her first solo album (Bella Donna).
  18. 1995 marked the first time Fleetwood Mac cut an album (Time) or toured without Stevie Nicks since 1975.
She had left the band due to a dispute with Mick Fleetwood over "Silver Springs" because she wanted to use it on her upcoming boxset Enchanted while he planned to use it for the The Chain: 25 Years... boxset. Since neither was willing to give in to the others wishes, she made the decision to leave the band.
  19. She's stated that the only band she would leave Fleetwood Mac for would be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Petty had a sheriff's badge made for her and declared her to be an honorary- and lone girl- member of the band.
  20. She's been nominated for a Grammy eight times as a solo artist, but her lone Grammy win came as a member of Fleetwood Mac when Rumours won Album of the Year back in 1978.

  22. She has a love for cartoons and animal crackers.
She even wants to eventually develop a cartoon based on the unreleased Buckingham Nicks song, Goldfish and the Ladybug.
  23. Her father always thought "Landslide" was about him.
It was actually inspired by her relationship Lindsey and whether or not she should leave him and music to go back to school, but she let him believe it was about him until the day he died because he always called it the prettiest song she had ever written. Now whenever she sings it, she dedicates it to him.
  24. She makes an appearance in the music video for Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious".
  25. She founded her own charity called The Stevie Nicks Soldier's Angel Foundation, which provides wounded veterans with music-filled iPods.
She actually flew up to DC the night before their Atlanta concert to receive an award for her work with wounded veterans.
  26. QUOTES:
  27. “Your graciousness is what carries you. It isn’t how old you are, how young you are, how beautiful you are, or how short your skirt is. What it is, is what comes out of your heart. If you are gracious, you have won the game.”
  28. “My mom used to always say, ‘You paint the picture and it will happen.’ I believe that if you close your eyes and see yourself up on that stage, being bigger than life, you become that person with that big, really good attitude.”
  29. The girls that I know, I tell them all these stories and…so that maybe at some point in their lives, one of my stories will pop up and save them from making a really bad mistake, because I made it, so let me be the only one to have made it then, don’t you make it, too.”
  30. Don’t give up. Don’t take no for an answer. Don’t let other people tell you who you should be and what you should do. If I had let everybody else tell me what I should be and what I should do, I would be a school teacher today and not a rock star. And not a songwriter. And not happy. Nobody else really knows what you want except you. Don’t give up the fight.
  31. "I am pretty fearless, and you know why? Because I don't handle fear very well; I'm not a good terrified person."
  32. "I was not going to be a stupid girl singer. I was going to be way more than that."
  33. "For 70 nights, right across America, I've been getting out there with two ex-lovers and we've been playing songs which are so specific about each of us, you just wouldn't know. We're friends now but we can't forget what happened between us."
  34. “There is a part of me that has to depend on fantasy, because if you can’t be somewhat of a fantasy person, then you can’t write.”
  35. "I have no fear, I have only love."
  36. "Everybody has their Velvet Underground moment, and I just want to remind you- whether you're old or young or middle aged or whatever- that if you love something and you really want to do it, please do not let anyone tell you you can't do it. Because as my mom used to say, life is long and if you're not doing something you love, you're going to be a bored person for the rest of your life. So it's really important that you find that thing that you love, your passion, and you do it."
