1. It was a set up.
My best grad school friend was dating his best childhood friend and they decided to introduce us.
  2. We met for the first time at a Lucinda Williams concert.
Fun fact: my mom was also there 😬 I was kind of in a long-distance relationship that was speeding steadily toward failure. It was also 9 days after 9/11 and everything was still a little emotionally weird.
  3. Since it was a concert, we didn't really get to talk much.
And since I was there with my mom 😬 who was in town for the weekend, we didn't hang out afterward.
  4. But the next week I went out for drinks with him and our mutual friends.
And this is when things started to happen.
  5. A few minutes into small talk, he took out a CD and put it on the table.
It was a burned copy of this. He said, "Your song is on there."
  6. I was confused.
  7. Then he explained.
  8. At the time I had a show on the college radio station.
My friend had told him when I was on and he had listened the week before. It was an alt-country show.
  9. I had talked on air about how "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League would be a perfect he said/she said love song for a band like The Sadies to cover.
  10. Guess which song was covered on that Moonshine Willy album?
  11. I started falling for him then.
And four years later, almost to the date, we got married. Last September we celebrated our 10th anniversary with a trip to France, which was the topic of my very first list ❤️
