WHY I LOVE THE BLUES

  1. It's got GREAT words.
The singers are often upset about something weird, like their uncle dying in a peet bog or losing a job they already hated (I invented those two examples but you know what I mean.)
  2. The rules seem more emotional than musical.
The blues is a feeling. It's about feeling BLUE.
  3. Odetta. Odetta. Odetta.
I saw one of the last live shows she ever did and wept as she sang selections from her entire career including my most beloved Christmas song "Go Where I Send Thee" and a perfect cover of "Something Inside So Strong" by Labi Siffre.
  4. Lead Belly can sing In The Pines and the Nirvana can sing In The Pines a billion years later with a totally different POV, musically and politically, and the essential tragic spirit survives even as it transforms.
    Isn't that beautiful?
  5. It's not jazz.
