WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE SYNESTHESIA

  1. Synesthesia is a neurological condition that takes several different forms: http://bit.ly/1HFm1GQ
  2. Mine is grapheme synesthesia, which means I associate letters, numbers, days of the week, and months with different colors.
  3. Each color is specific to its letter or number, and they are all colors that are incredibly complex and hard to describe.
Any color depicted in this list is an approximation!
  4. As a result, people, places, emotions, and memories tend to also have specific colors.
  5. I didn't realize this wasn't the normal way of perception until my senior year of high school. I was looking at a book with some of my friends, and it mentioned how John Mayer associated certain music notes with colors. I said, "oh weird. Like what normal people do with numbers!"
All my friends looked at me like I was insane.
  6. I don't remember ever not thinking this way.
  7. Here is what a week looks like in my head
These colors are not right, but they are the best I can do with crayola! Also the order is weird, because we read right to left, but I start with Sunday. Also it's not really a line, because the days sort if just continue on into each other. And they are three dimensional. See what I mean about this being hard to explain?
  8. I've only met one other person with synesthesia in my life, and he told me that Friday was red. I told him it was green. It actually got really heated.
We went to school together but didn't talk much after that initial argument. We just couldn't get over it, and I think it was honestly really personal for us.
  9. People ask me to "read their auras". I usually just tell them what color their names are, but it's amazing how often that matches their personality.
  10. Memorizing stuff if really easy, because I just have to remember color combos.
  11. Math is really hard for me.
I think all the changing of numbers overstimulates me. It just gets too overwhelming.
  12. My living spaces tend to be colorful.
Since I associate color with so many things, I really like to surround myself with it. I think it can off-putting for some people, but I find it comforting.
  13. I don't have a favorite color. I associate so many colors with so many things, I really couldn't ever put one above the other.
  14. I also tend to wear really colorful clothing.
  15. I can tell when I'm not maintaining my depression, because my colors become less vivid and are harder to grasp.
  16. Art makes me incredibly emotional.
Because memories also have colors, when I look at a piece of art and see that color, it takes me right back to that memory. I can look at a piece of art and see the subject, but also my grandma dying, playing in my backyard, and teaching my dog to swim, all in one painting.
  17. Colors in nature hit me hard too.
Especially green leaves when the sun is shining through them. This is the color of pure happiness!
  18. It makes me a better artist.
  19. I can't imagine life any other way.
  20. Synesthesia has made my life richer and more beautiful in every way. I'm grateful that this is the way I see the world, and wouldn't change it at all.
Though I probably would have told you the exact opposite when I almost failed math freshman year of college.
