News stories my mom avoided talking about when I was young vs. What she says now

inspired by everyone's "First major news story"
  1. Start of the Gulf War
We watched it on TV. I was scared because we had family in the military and even then I knew war was deadly.
  2. Dr. Jack Kevorkian AKA Dr. Death
Living in Metro Detroit, Dr. Death and his Death Van were in the news all the time. My mother's father committed suicide so I see why it was a touchy subject for her. I am fascinated by him today. I wonder if people would feel differently about him now.
  3. Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky
Dawson's Creek was banned at our house because of sex. Is this a surprise?
  4. Things she talks with my nephew about now:
Racial injustice, rapists, homicide, abortion, homophobia, Islamophobia, war, protests
