1. We got up early and grabbed a cab for Kiyomizu-dera.
    Static
It was only going to be a few cents more than taking the bus.
  2. When we first arrived there were hardly any other tourists at all.
    Static
  3. We walked all around and enjoyed the beauty.
    Static
  4. I bought a charm for leg health.
    Static
  5. Then we walked around the shopping street next to the temple.
    Static
    I got a lucky cat.
  6. We walked through some nice older quiet neighborhoods to get to our lunch place.
    Static
  7. For lunch, we went to Kikunoi. It's a kaiseki place with three Michelin stars.
    Static
Kaiseki is a traditional multi course meal. It was about $150 per person at lunch.
  8. We got a private room with floor chairs. It's hard to see but under the table there is a hole in the floor for your feet.
    Static
And thank goodness for that because this meal lasted 4 hours!
  9. Static
  10. Started with a hot towel and some light green tea.
    Static
  11. They brought the first dish and poured you a small cup of sake.
    Static
The dish was walnut "tofu". It was great.
  12. They also brought a menu, so we knew what we were getting!
    Static
  13. Assortment of appetizers, served in a cricket cage
    Static
  14. It was all edible even that thing that looks like a pine needle.
    Static
I especially liked the barracuda sushi and hamo roe terrine.
  15. Sashimi #1: I loved the young Spanish mackerel
    Static
  16. Sashimi #2: young bluefin tuna with soy marinated egg yolk.
    Static
I realize that bluefin are overfished but my policy is that I generally eat things if they are served to me even if I would not normally order them.
  17. Soup with fried tilefish, egg custard, matsutake mushroom
    Static
  18. Whole fried sweetfish with roe.
    Static
This was a little difficult for me as you are supposed to eat them whole and eating whole animals is a bit disturbing for me. I mostly picked out the roe which was delicious.
  19. My husband had no such qualms
    Static
  20. Sticky rice with sea urchin and seaweed
    Static
Textures were difficult for me here. Not sure if I even like the flavor of sea urchin and the texture is difficult.
  21. Passionfruit wasabi sorbet - delicious
    Static
  22. Hamo hotpot: fun and interactive. We each got our own burner and hotpot.
    Static
  23. Pickles, chicken with rice, and Edamame soup. Loved that soup!
    Static
  24. Black tea
    Static
  25. Drinking the soup
    Static
For the most part you are not given a spoon in Japan, just chopsticks. It is expected and perfectly polite for you to pick up dishes so they are closer or to drink your soup. (You do get a spoon with ramen but that is likely related to the fact that it is served in a HUGE bowl).
  26. First dessert: poached figs, grapes, Earl grey jelly, Ceylon tea granité
    Static
Sort of bitter with all the tea
  27. Last bite: traditional style dessert with brown sugar and lily bulb, very good.
    Static
  28. It was served with matcha.
    Static
  29. Yum, matcha!
    Static
Oh my gosh, it was such an amazing dining experience!
  30. After that we walked over to Gion and walked around.
    Static
  31. Static
  32. I didn't even see any geisha to touch!
    Static
But my husband spotted one in the back of a cab.
  33. We found another Kusama pumpkin!
    Static
  34. I fell prey to the aggressive advertising for Rothys before this trip. And honestly they are great! I haven't quite worn them for a full day yet but did wear them for the rest of the day on this day. Cute and comfy.
    Static
  35. We then walked over to the Pokémon center.
    Static
  36. I got fries as a snack from Mosburger.
    Static
We walked around through various shops.
  37. We had a late dinner at Donguri for Osaka style okinomiyaki.
    Static
  38. We got beef...
    Static
  39. Italian style...
    Static
  40. ... And pork kimchi with added cheese. This one was my favorite.
    Static
I still prefer Hiroshima style though!
  41. I enjoyed the touch screen ordering and kind of wanted to order the side of "potato and cheese are the best friends"
    Static
  42. Great day!
