Well kids, 2011 is just about over — only a few hours remain till we ring in 2012. What a year it's been! While we wait, I thought we could play a game. First, I'll say a bunch of things that happened this year. Then, I'll show you one picture of people reacting to each event. Finally, you figure out which pic was from which event! Ready? Let's go.
  1. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand on February 22.
80% of the city's water and sewage infrastructure was damaged.
  2. On March 11, an underwater earthquake sent a ten-meter-high tsunami crashing onto the coast of Japan.
The quake had a magnitude of 8.9, one of the strongest ever recorded. Aftershocks hit magnitudes of 7.
  3. The UK's Prince William married Kate Middleton on April 29.
    You might have noticed.
  4. Pope Jean Paul II was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1.
If you put together everything he wrote, it would equal the length of 20 Bibles.
  5. Notorious terrorist mastermind Osama Bin Laden was killed in an American military operation on May 2.
Ten years after the attack he is best known for. Can you believe it's been ten years??
  6. South Sudan became the world's newest country on its Independence Day, July 9.
The country has an uphill battle: internal conflict is still rampant five months later, and health care has been devastatingly lacking for years. Maternal mortality is the highest in the world. 😢
  7. On October 20, the deposed leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed during the Battle of Sirte.
He was the longest-serving Arab leader.
  8. On December 17, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died.
One biography claims that he wrote 1500 books in three years.
