1. I opened List today to write a funny pop-culture list. I didn't read anything before I started typing, not wanting to lose my idea.
  2. I hit post and only then started scrolling through those people I have notifications for, seeing lists from last night and this morning, the news that is rocking this app hit me.
  3. Like many, I didn't know Biz personally, but she was one of the very first people I interacted with here.
  4. She fostered this community from the beginning. She made us all feel welcome.
  5. I love the way this community has come together in this moment. I love that the featured lists are all a tribute to Biz's wonderful presence here. I love that we collectively have taken a step back from the norm, the silliness and fun that often permeates this app, to honor one of our own.
  6. I grew up in a culture that often paints suicide as a very selfish act, a culture that refuses to try and empathize with those suffering.
  7. After reading so many of your lists in tribute, I picked up one of my favorite books and read the story of a character that takes their own life.
  8. It's a beautiful and poignant look at the end of life. I hope it doesn't come across as insensitive to those hurt and confused in this time.
  9. I cry every time I read this story, it puts so much of life into perspective and reminds me that we will never know what exactly Biz struggled with. But we ought to remember the beauty that she contributed to this app, and, I am sure, to the world around her.
  10. The sections "Letters from Zedelgham" in David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas ends thus:
  11. "The world's a shadow theater, an opera, and such things are writ large in its libretto.
  12. Don't be too cross at my role. You couldn't understand, no matter how much I explained.
  13. The healthy cannot understand the emptied, the broken. You'd try to list all the reasons for living, but I left 'Em behind at Victoria Station back in early summer.
  14. I can't have you blaming yourself for failing to dissuade me. You may anyway, but don't, Sixsmith, don't be such an ass.
  15. Knew I'd never see my twenty-fifth birthday. Am early for once.
  16. The lovelorn, the cry-for-helpers, all mawkish tragedians who give suicide a bad name are the idiots who rush it, like amateur conductors.
  17. People pontificate 'Suicide is selfishness.'
  18. Career churchman go a step further and call it a cowardly assault on the living
  19. Oafs argue this specious line for varying reasons:
  20. to evade fingers of blame,
  21. to impress one's audience with one's mental fiber,
  22. to vent anger,
  23. or just because one lacks the necessary suffering to sympathize.
  24. No, what's selfish is to demand another to endure an intolerable existence, just to spare families, friends, and enemies a bit of soul-searching.
  25. Now I am a spent firework, but at least I've been a firework"
  26. We were blessed to have seen Biz's firework. And we will miss you dearly, @biz
