~JUST GIRLY THINGS ~

Inspired by three of these things happening to me just yesterday & also the patriarchy.
  1. Not putting your headphones in all the way when you're walking alone so you can hear if anyone is walking up behind you.
  2. Calling your mom/sister/friend when you're walking home alone so that someone will hear if something happens to you, OR
  3. Dialing 911 & holding your thumb over the call button when you're walking home alone at night.
  4. Holding your keys in-between your knuckles as a weapon even though you read an article saying it probably wouldn't actually help you.
  5. Making sure to tell someone when you go somewhere, especially if it's a new place &/or with a new person.
  6. Texting your mom/sister/friend the address of a strange building you have to go in to.
  7. Starting sentences with an apology/phrasing things like you're not sure they're a good idea even when they obviously are.
  8. Doing hw & coming across something you think you might want to make a point about in a later class & researching the entire tangential topic to an unnecessary extent so that you can be 100% sure of what you're saying.
  9. Not leaving home for three days because you just don't have it in you to deal with the street harassment.
  10. That specific feeling of immense relief when you reject a guy and he doesn't go into a rage spiral.
  11. Learning to laugh when strange guys do creepy shit like cup your breasts and guess your bra size because it's 2am & you def can't take him & his friend & you're pretty sure the three other people in the subway car aren't gonna intervene if you tell him to fuck off and he flips out on you.
  12. Making friends/forming an alliance with other girls on the subway platform when you're going home late because guys are somewhat less likely to be creepy if you're not alone.
  13. Getting really good at reading dudes and your surroundings so you can quickly factor exactly how safe it is to reject a guy or call him out on being creepy/a dick.
  14. Being careful about which roads you drive down late at night in case your car breaks down/being terrified that if your car breaks down a man will stop to "help" you won't know if he's really there to murder you or help you and if you ask him to leave and he does, will ANOTHER man stop and will HE murder you instead?!

  15. Trying desperately not to be home alone when a repairman comes to the house.
Or, left with no alternative, sneaking a pic and texting it to mom/sister just in case and keeping your shoes on and the door unlocked at all times.

  16. When I'm dropping someone off, I always wait in my car until they are inside!

  17. Checking the backseat of your car before you get in to make sure no one is hiding back there lying in wait for you.
  18. Waiting until you're at your car to unlock it & locking the door as soon as you get in.
  19. Casually/subconsciously mapping out an escape route/a plan whenever you're alone somewhere with a man you don't know (or even ones you do).
  20. Picking a parking spot based on how well lit it is

  21. Asking your guy friends to walk you to your car at night when you've parked in a spot further than they can see from their door

  22. Having to take the next elevator because you're scared of what that man might do with just you and him inside of it.

  23. Casually joining another group of people walking in your direction but trying to make it look like it's just a coincidence and you're not just trying not to appear to be alone.

  24. Holding back a bit on a hug to a male just in case he thinks the wrong thing.

  26. Taking self defense classes

  27. Choosing your outfit and shoes based upon how easily you could run in them

  28. Unnecessarily carrying a closed umbrella and making it obvious I have one (swinging it slightly) when walking alone in the dark, so I don't look like an easy target.
It also makes me feel stronger, like I could actually take the guy on if he attacked me. I know I probably couldn't though.

  32. Random men calling you 'darling' or 'sweetheart'
so condescending & gross. especially when you're at work & you have to smile & go along with it.
