And off she flew

  1. Sheltered deep in a nest was a little bird, small yet mighty, hesitant but capable.
  2. Upon her first inspection of her new home, she hated it. In fact, she hated everything about it.
  3. It was too small, she didn't know where she was and she didn't know who she was sharing her nest with.
  4. All she wanted the moment she arrived was to leave, to fly beyond the nest and take on the great big world around her.
  5. But she also knew there was some reason why she ended up in that nest.
  6. "I must have something to learn," she thought.
  7. So she stuck around.
  8. She met the others.
  9. She explored her new surroundings.
  10. She made some mistakes.
  11. She grew.
  12. She learned.
  13. Soon, the nest didn't seem that bad.
  14. She actually began to like the nest.
  15. Maybe she even loved it.
  16. But then one day, she learned her time at the nest was up.
  17. She had to fly away and go out into the great big world she at first longed to join.
  18. Suddendly, that big world seemed too big.
  19. Too scary.
  20. Too unknown.
  21. The nest was safe.
  22. She had a life there with those she loved.
  23. The nest was her home.
  24. But the day she had to fly away came soon enough.
  25. She didn't want to go, but she knew she had to.
  26. She also knew that her time in the nest served her well; she was much stronger now, much more confident, ready to take on life beyond her cozy home.
  27. She knew it was time to fly, but she was scared.
  28. "What if I fall?" she wondered.
  29. Then she remembered how many had left the nest before her, how many had spread their wings and found something even greater beyond the confines of the nest and returned — only briefly — to share of their adventures.
  30. "There must be life on the other side," she admitted to herself.
  31. She closed her eyes, and she hoped with every ounce of her being that once she lept from the edge of the nest, she'd begin a wondrous journey of her own.
  32. The cool springtime breeze carried to her the words she needed to hear:
  33. "There is freedom waiting for you,
  34. On the breezes of the sky,
  35. And you ask, 'What if I fall?'
  36. Oh but my darling,
  37. What if you fly?"
  38. She took a deep breath.
  39. She knew what she had to do.
  40. And off she flew.
