I know, I know, aren't most spaces existing? But my job is to create spaces, or at least augment them, to give context, characterization, sense of place, to create a mood or a backstory or a whole world. So when I find an existing space, a real place, that gives me all that, I take notes. Some friends and I started to catalog some of our favorites.
  1. I am fascinated by the real places I find myself in, the layers of clutter that have collected over time, the things people choose to keep, and what those collections of things tell us about a life, the mundane and the precious, side by side.

  11. One of my favorite parts of the job is location scouting - finding locations that exist in the world that already have history and texture and context and character, that we can bend to the needs of our own story.
Also these scouts often give me access to places I would never otherwise get to go, sifting through the personal spaces of real people, mining them for authenticity, idiosyncrasy, richness and detail.

  33. When I travel now, I look for places like this. So that when I do create spaces from the ground up, I can think about those extra lived in layers, those small details, those strange juxtapositions that make a place real.
