ISIS ISN'T A FUCKING JOKE

Inspired by some recent things on my social media feeds (and @ChrisK 's "I've got a bone to pick" list on calling people Nazis). Also, daesh = ISIS
  1. The tragedy is CURRENTLY HAPPENING
I'm all about making fun of evil dudes and gallows humor. But people are actively being tortured and murdered; daesh is actively running a psychotic militant state. We can joke about it after it's over, but there's actual work to be done.
  2. The jokes are mostly just Islamaphobia
Mocking Allah, snide comments on the dress, fake-Arabic... and slapping "daesh" at the end... Isn't a daesh joke. It's anti-Islam or anti-Arab with a cushion of something "actually bad" so you don't feel like a racist. (***also "Allah" is the term for God in ALL the abrahamic faiths, so Christians mocking Allah are actually being blasphemous against their own beliefs 🙈)
  3. You're not post 9/11 Lorne Michaels
"Can we be funny?" was a definitive moment in comedy in the face of tragedy. But three things: it was personal; the killing was not currently happening; SNL knows how to walk the fine line. I've seen a couple bits from Syrian comedians who can handle this with tact, but even then it's still hard because the crisis is ONGOING.
  4. Flippant statements hold a lot of weight.
When people say things like "ugh bad day, guess I'll join ISIS" ... Fuck you. You want to systematically rape and murder people? That sounds like a good time? Oh that's not "what you meant?" Why don't you say it to my friends' faces who've witnessed daesh up close and see if they find it funny?
  5. Don't joke on the internetz.
Daesh is all over social media and they see that shit. There is a ton of research on radicalism recruiting and social media. (Also the U.S. / some European governments track mentions and it might make travel difficult.)
  6. In short: This is really happening and it's really bad. Try not to be a dick.
    Please.
