  1. My family and I were away on holidays at the beach.
It was the first family holiday we had been on. We were staying in a house on the beach in Cabarita in northern New South Wales.
  2. The house sat on a large flat block of grass which turned into sand then straight onto the beach.
  3. Even as a child I understood it was a little piece of paradise there.
  4. There was an old bike with a basket on the front at this house.
I remember taking turns with my brother and sister for Dad riding us around on the grass on the front of the bike between his arms. I can now figure out he was only 32 years old. I remember thinking how big and strong his arms were that he would never let me fall.
  5. It was a remote location in the 70's not like it is now.
I remember it being so dark at night you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. I was scared of everything at this age.
  6. When I was too scared to sleep at night in the dark my Dad would let me stay up and read books to me on the couch till I was too tired to stay awake any longer.
  7. While we were there I had my birthday.
I remember getting a bracelet with a charm on it. The first piece of jewellery I remember owning. I felt so grown up.
  8. My Dad told us we were just going for a drive and they drove us to Sea World for the day as a surprise.
Money was hard to come by when I was growing up so it was a treat we kids never expected.
  9. That week was full of happy family memories.
I remember my father digging a hole in the sand and he put me into it and he told my mum he didn't know where I was. And I also distinctly remember how she panicked and then how angry she was with him when she realised what he'd done. He whispered to me "woops - let's never do that again!" and spent the rest of the day trying to make it up to her.
  10. I would love to revisit that week again.
That time of childhood when there are no responsibilities. Where your biggest concern is what games you will play that day at the beach.
  11. This holiday is one of my happiest memories.
