1. I have vocalized on multiple social media platforms that I'm dissatisfied with this year's nominations.
  2. This has been met with a lot of backlash from folks, which I expect. You can't post anything on social media without being ready to get some dislike.
  3. Let's get one thing straight: I love movies. I see tons of movies. I want to work in film someday quite desperately.
  4. But when the Academy Award nominations came out today, I was disappointed.
  5. There are solely white actors nominated for performance.
  6. This alone is shocking and upsetting, but it's only furthered by the fact that this isn't the first time this has happened.
  7. What's going on here?
  8. There WERE amazing performances by minority actors this year. There is no question.
  9. Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, and the women of Tangerine come to mind.
  10. And there are many more.
  11. I regard that being upset over a decision that is so subjective, such as opinion of talent, is futile.
  12. But in every circle I have discussed this topic in today, I have been met by at least one person offering, "well yeah, but besides no one of color being nominated, the nominations are pretty good."
  13. No.
  14. This is an issue that needs to be regarded, and a dialogue that needs to be continued.
  15. There is no "besides that" in institutionalized racism.
