I Just Graduated From College AMA Except What I'm Going to Do with My Life Now

(Or ask that if you want, it might help me prep for when every family member asks me that)
  1. Did you decorate your cap?
    Suggested by   @joemurphy
  2. @joemurphy I had planned to decorate it with this classic Spongebob title card over the weekend, but I just got too tired and was too lazy to do it. 😬
  3. CONGRATS!!!! how do you feel?
    Suggested by   @lexie_elyse
  4. @lexie_elyse I feel so tired and like I was already done a semester ago. This semester just felt very extra and weird, since most of my classes were online. But I feel sooooo relieved to be done. Hallelujah!
  5. What was your favorite class?
    Suggested by   @lexie_elyse
  6. @lexie_elyse any class by my favorite teacher (he taught a lot of tv writing classes and a tv producing class - I took every class of his) and my "From Lucy to Lost" online tv class this semester, which was just watching old tv shows and learning how tv has changed over the years. It was an easy A but I also liked learning about tv history.
  7. Are you inclined to get a job, take some time off, or get an additional degree?
    Suggested by   @BWN_7
  8. @BWN_7 I want to get a job and save up some money (I have a student job through the end of the month but then I'll have to find something else) so I can move to LA soon with my best friend who graduates in May. I might go to grad school in the future, but right now I want to focus on saving up and getting to California.
  9. Congrats! How are you celebrating??
    Suggested by   @sarahtee93
  10. @sarahtee93 Thank you! I had lunch with my family today and we'll have a family party this weekend. Other than that, I'll celebrate by sleeping and relaxing for a few days. A trip to Disneyland this month would be cool because I want to ride the Tower of Terror before it closes! 😩 But we'll see.
  11. Why LA?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  12. @andersun I want to write for TV, and LA is the place to do it! And if I can't write for TV then I'd like to still work in the entertainment industry in some capacity.
  13. Who would have a better chance of also graduating with your degree from your college: werewolf, vampire or zombie?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  14. @andersun probably a vampire because a lot of my classes were at night. Plus, vampires are up at night anyway and might as well stress over homework until 3AM while they're up.
  15. What would you do with 10 circus poodles?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  16. @andersun I'd have them eat these circus cookies and tell me if they also think they're great for 3 bites and then taste disgusting
  17. Did you graduate with the same major you started out with?
    Why or why not?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  18. @andersun Yep! Started with Film and ended with it. I considered switching at the beginning of my sophomore year because I wasn't as happy as I thought I should be, or as my classmates, so I thought maybe film just wasn't for me even though I wanted to be a director since I was in 3rd grade.
But it turns out I wasn't happy because I didn't want to work in FILM, I wanted to work in TV, and film classes never talk about TV, or when they do they just say "TV is different." So I realized I needed to take all of the (few) TV classes my school offered.
  19. What 3-5 TV shows have your favorite writing?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  20. @andersun my three favorite shows of all time: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Freaks & Geeks, and My So-Called Life. And right now I'm really loving Veep.
P.S. if anyone has any shows they love the writing on, let me know! I'm always looking to add shows to my list of things to watch (will I EVER get to Six Feet Under? Time will tell).
  21. Should I bake this experimental $1.39 lunch pizza directly on the rack or should I put it on a cookie sheet?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  22. @andersun play it safe. Cookie sheet.
Also I love those Totino's party pizzas!
  23. What degree did you earn? From which school?
    Suggested by   @andersun
  24. @andersun Bachelor of Arts in Filmmaking Practices at Arizona State University
AKA that school that always gets made fun of in TV and movies, like in this episode of 30 Rock https://youtu.be/lFcTDbHs1LQ
  25. Looking back on it, how do you feel about your college experience as a whole? Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?
    Suggested by   @juliareese
  26. @juliareese I feel pretty good about it as a whole. I think I did the best I could in my classes. I had a not so great freshman year (no friends, went home every weekend, hated living in the dorms), but after I got a job working in those same dorms I hated, I made some really great friends and also figured out what I want to do after college.
I would say I wish freshman year went better/I had gotten more involved, but I tried to get involved, and I just think it wasn't gonna happen that year. But if I didn't have that bad freshman year in the dorms, I would have never worked there (job required you to live on campus a full year prior to working there) and made the friends I did. That job really saved my sanity! All I really wanted out of school was to really figure out what I want to do, and it happened, so I'm happy.
  27. Identify the type/genre of TV show each of these following 19th Century US presidents would be best suited to star in: A) Martin Van Buren; B) U.S. Grant; C) Grover Cleveland.
    Suggested by   @andersun
  28. @andersun Martin Van Buren: a 24-like action series called "Van Ruin" U.S. Grant: a procedural drama called "The Grant" Grover Cleveland: a buddy cop comedy starring him and Grover from Sesame Street called "Grover & Grover"
  29. CONGRATS!!! 🎉 What did you have at your celebratory lunch?
I'm all about the food #sorrynotsorry
    Suggested by   @Diplomatic_diva
  30. @Diplomatic_diva Lol. I had a BLTA croissant at Red Robin! And an orange cream soda which was the best part of the meal.
  31. How does one go about getting a first job writing for television? Are there want ads? Pitch-meetings?
[I'll "allow" a phone-a-friend (@Grosstastic) on this one if needed?]
    Suggested by   @andersun
  32. Well first you tag @bjnovak to see if he can give you any advice on the subject. But other than that, you can apply to writing fellowships (FOX, NBC, etc. have some), write in improv groups and meet people there, just network as much as you can (especially in LA/NY) so you can get an agent/writing job, all while writing on your own.
I'll be trying to network as much as I can while trying to become a better writer, so if I do get lucky, I won't suck at it too bad. I don't think there's any wrong way to do it as long as you keep writing.
  33. Will you remember us when you're a famous tv writer?
    Suggested by   @lexie_elyse
  34. @lexie_elyse Lol of course. If I ever win an Emmy I will thank all of you on li.st. You can all come hang out on set too.
