STORY OF A ROAD TRIP

Participants: me + 16y.o. daughter (@Lindsey2Mae) Destination: Myrtle Beach, SC
  1. β€’
    We leave by 8am
This was the predetermined "good time" to leave. Check in is not till 3pm. We are in no rush!
  2. β€’
Stop for fuel then breakfast items from chik-fil-a
I had the chicken egg and cheese bagel. (this will be important later) πŸ“πŸ³πŸ§€ This is a fairly large breakfast for me, but I didn't eat dinner the night before bc: life stuff - so I was extra hungry!
  3. β€’
Cashier lady seems unusually flustered and hands things to me from inside the window in a very erratic manner.
We comment about how it must be her first day, so we forgive her! We're so nice and understanding!
  4. β€’
We drive uneventfully for 4.5 hours.
Literally, I-95 South was beautifully quiet for a Friday
  5. β€’
Jinxed myself bc 30 min later we are in a 10 mi backup due to an accident
It is now 12:30. Daughter is asleep in the front passenger seat. I am starting to get restless and think about getting off at next exit to let traffic die down. Maybe walk a bit. Not hungry yet though bc of πŸ“πŸ³πŸ§€ so, with no one else's opinion to weigh - decide to ride it out.
  6. β€’
Finally break free from backup and cruise along some more
Still thinking about when to stop and eat lunch, but don't see anything too appealing from interstate signs so just continue listening to SiriusXM flipping back and forth bw 100, 101, 102, 105 and 108 (as I always do when there are no other opinions to weigh)
  7. β€’
Once we cross into SC, decide I can wait no longer to refuel
We pull into first available gas station with plans to refuel and grab a drink (we are so close now- another hour and 20 min! Wouldn't we rather continue to hotel, check in and then go for a relaxing meal??)
  8. β€’
    MY CHECK CARD IS NOWHERE!!!
We tear the car and contents of car apart. We empty bags we never even went near. We lift floor mats. We empty wallets and pockets of jackets we aren't even wearing. WHAT IN THE?????
  9. β€’
    Panic ensues 😨😨😨😨
    Hungry/angry/pitiful crying occurs. Not cute
  10. β€’
Decide card MUST be back at Chik fil a bc I haven't stopped anywhere or bought anything since 8:20 am
I call them. They are super nice and are very thorough in their checking/looking. I wonder if it would be worse for them to find my check card 6 hours north of where I am or not . AM I CRAZY???πŸ˜–πŸ˜–
  11. β€’
She comes back on the line...
  12. β€’
"Ma'am - I have your card. It was on the ground outside the drive thru window"
Ok, so I am NOT crazy. Card really was NOT in my car/possession or able to be found. Good.
  13. β€’
Start worst case scenario-ing how the next phone call (to husband) is going to go
He is very calm and helpful. Yay! We decide I should use the little cash in my wallet ($9) to get gas to get to hotel.
  14. β€’
While driving toward hotel he suggests going to local branch of our home bank, showing ID and making a withdrawal.
Brilliant! He sends address from Google. We head in that direction. Feeling: Good. Renewed. Purposeful. But, Hungry
  15. β€’
    Calls back minutes later...
after having tried to call all listed numbers for the branch in SC. It appears to no longer be there- lines all out of service. Google FAIL!
  16. β€’
    New Plan: Western Union!
This is a new experience! We each fumble through multiple locations, broken down machines, confusion and finally!! πŸ™ŒπŸ» two helpful Customer Service Angels πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡ πŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’Έ
  17. β€’
Pass up lots of food and bathrooms while Western Unioning in a local Bi-Lo.
Q: Why? I was in a grocery store! Why didn't I pick up something to eat? A: Unknown
  18. β€’
We make it to the hotel! We are only about two hours behind schedule!
It's 5pm. I need to complete 1 last step. I can do this!
  19. β€’
It's nearly impossible to check into a hotel without a credit card!!
They don't know what to do with you! They charge you $60 dollars for incidentals (2 night stay).
  20. β€’
My limited cash supply quickly decreases. I'm down to $190
This begins another round of panic! What about gas for the much-longer-on-a-Sunday trip home? I feel so nervous to have to exist with only cash in my wallet! I'm hungry and angry and pitiful and now incredibly anxious!
  21. β€’
We unpack and attempt to relax. Haha
For me, this means crying in the bathroom. I'm exhausted. I want to crawl in bed.
  22. β€’
I leave daughter alone in hotel to shower etc while I get back in the car and drive to the nearest grocery store
Piggly-Wiggly! 🐷 yes! Finally - a bright spot! I buy a six pack of bottled water and 2 bananas. Also a Mtn Dew for the kid. Contemplate alcohol but decide to save the money. Times are tough 😒
  23. β€’
Return to hotel. Take a Xanax and three Advil and a hot shower. Feeling much better!!
  24. β€’
    Lesson learned...
Always make sure you get your card back when utilizing a drive-thru window!
