I found my a nodule while practicing my thyroid exam - it turned out to be papillary thyroid cancer. I had a thyroidectomy on my week off between first and second year of PA school.
  1. Don't get it during summer!
    This is when everyone takes vacation time - it will be difficult to schedule appointments and surgery. If possible try to be diagnosed with cancer in winter or fall for scheduling ease
  2. Control the urge to tell people on Facebook to stop complaining about mundane things
    No one will you appreciate you commenting "no one fucking cares" on their post about bad traffic
  3. You might think you like pain killers, but a thyroidectomy is not worth it!
    Spend the first week titrating up an adequate dose of stool softner and laxative
