    Winry Rockbell
Not only is she a genius engineer, she continues to save lives while working in a male-dominated field and no one even cares. They're like "oh yeah Winry is the best mechanic I wouldn't even think to see anyone else." She takes over her family business at age 14 after her parents die. She is met with her parents' killer and has the chance to kill him AND SHE DOESN'T. She risks her life as a volunteer kidnapped victim in order to protect her best friends and NOT ONCE did she act as a victim. 😍😚

    Izumi Curtis
When people ask who she is her reply is "I'm just a housewife." A housewife with a (literal) killer roundhouse kick. She takes the common misperception that housewives are dumb and useless and THROWS IT OUT THE DOOR. She singlehandedly took down the country's most well-trained military men AND THEN brought home a dead bear to prove to her teacher that she can do anything.

    Riza Hawkeye
I would follow Riza Hawkeye to the end of the planet. She joins the military and becomes the subordinate to her best friend and vows to protect him even if it means following him into hell (sa-woon). She is the only female in a squad of men and she continues to be smart, strong, level-headed while still showing weakness and compassion.

    Maria Ross
😍 Maria Ross leaves the country quasi-voluntarily in order to protect the military higher-ups who illegally broke her out of jail for a crime she didn't commit. And she cries about it. Because she's upset and stressed and human. But then she pledges her life to do anything she can to help the team who broke her out of jail and she follows through in the most badass comeback I have ever witnessed.

    Olivier Armstrong
I don't even think a description of Olivier does it justice. She basically overthrows an entire senior command branch of the military. She sneakily shows compassion for her subordinates while mercilessly destroying those who aren't loyal to her. She is one of the few female generals and she has the utmost respect for and from EVERYONE in her unit. No one crosses her.

    Trisha Elric
☺️☺️☺️ The perfect mom. Her husband leaves her and she puts on the happiest of faces and still talks well of him. She gets sick and doesn't let her compassion and happiness waiver. She teaches her sons the best life lessons and will stand by them even while they make mistakes.

    Lan Fan
When you're first introduced to Lan Fan she's wearing a mask and the boy fighting her breaks the mask and he's like "wtf you're a GIRL?!" Hell yeah she is. She recovers from a prosthetic limb surgery in SIX MONTHS when the doctor told her it would be years. She was like "hell no I don't have time for that." She is more than a prince's bodyguard or sidekick, she is the reason he is still alive.

    May Chang
She may be twelve and she may be whiny and she may cry but not once does she think about turning around and giving up. She is willing to die for her family and for her country. She teams up with older men who laugh at her for being a little girl and then she saves their lives and they're like "oh shit she's something" and then they protect her with their lives in return.

    Roy Mustang
The only boy I'm putting on my list because I feel like he is the only one completely void of sexism. Not once does he doubt any of the women on his team. He trusts them with his life. He never overlooks a women and gives her job to a man. He asks strong women to get involved in his rebellion because he trusts them and knows they can do a good job. Not once does he make jokes about a women's inability to perform her job.

These are all characters from Fullmetal Alchemist all right
  13. β€’
    Fine
  14. β€’
    BUT
  15. β€’
Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the only shows where women AND MEN are shown with EQUAL expectations of intelligence, capabilities, compassion, strength, badassery, and complexity.
  16. β€’
The women in Fullmetal Alchemist are portrayed just as eloquently as their male counterparts in a patriarchal society.
The show is highly dominated by the military, which in turn is highly dominated by men. There's a lot of testosterone.
  17. β€’
These women are not created to be romantic interests, comic relief, lampshades, NOR are they meant to be "like men."
  18. β€’
They are women. Some have stereotypical women traits, some work in a male dominated field. Some are mothers, some are not. Some are old, some are young. Some are married/involved, some are single. Some are nice and caring, some are mean and tough.
  19. β€’
Fullmetal Alchemist shows a range of women who are all expected to be equal to men. None are weaker because of their age, appearance, career, emotions, or intelligence.
  20. β€’
(Fullmetal Alchemist is also written by a women who broke into a very male-dominated genre.)

You should all go watch it now. You won't be disappointed.
