Why I Support Writing in Books

😱 It's like I commit sins! 😱
  1. β€’
    I love writing in books.
  2. β€’
When I get a book my first thought is "oh man I can't wait to destroy this baby."
  3. β€’
    (Just kidding.)
  4. β€’
My first thought is usually "AH OH MAN THIS SOUNDS FANTASTIC I CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT."
  5. β€’
    πŸ€“πŸ˜πŸ“š
  6. β€’
    I majored in English.
With a concentration in Writing. We read a lot. We wrote a lot.
  7. β€’
At school I think it's pretty normal for some people to take notes when they read.
  8. β€’
So why not just write in the book you're reading???????
  9. β€’
You can underline and highlight and star sections and draw arrows and connect ideas and put your thoughts write down on the page!
  10. β€’
    😱😨πŸ’₯πŸ’₯ WOW!
  11. β€’
How useful is it to open up the book you're reading, raise your hand, add your idea to the class discussion, read or paraphrase the quote or section to support it, and have it all there on the page?????
  12. β€’
Text is meant to be interacted with. It's meant to be played with. It's meant to change in the hands of whoever is reading it.
  13. β€’
One of my favorite things is buying a used book is already seeing notes and highlights in the pages; it reminds me that someone else has loved this book and often they have valuable thoughts to add to my own perception of the book.
Once I had a British Romanticism anthology and some girl (stereotypically assuming it was a girl because of the handwriting) had some BALLER points. I loved reading her interpretations and found it hilarious that I could pinpoint the exact moment where she stopped reading because the notes would stop.
  14. β€’
If text was meant to be sacred and untouchable we would have libraries in the form of museums and you wouldn't be able to buy individual books and you would have to read books through a plexiglass screen without the full enjoyment of r e a d i n g.
  15. β€’
(πŸ€” This sounds like something we have already. πŸ€” Maybe a kindle??? πŸ€” One of the many reasons I do not support e-books. YOU CAN'T LOVE THEM PROPERLY. WHO WANTS TO READ TEXT THROUGH A SCREEN BARRIER???)
  16. β€’
Ok. Moving aside from schoolbooks, even if I'm reading a fun book for pleasure I still write it books!
  17. β€’
When I find a book I love there are probably going to be quotes I love.
  18. β€’
Am I going to let myself forget about them?????
  19. β€’
    N O O O O O O O O O O O O 😫
  20. β€’
    I'm going to underline it.
  21. β€’
I'm going to post-it the page.
  22. β€’
I'm going to write it down in my little notebook where I keep my favorite quotes.
  23. β€’
I'm going to interact with my reading. I'm going to make sure it knows it's loved. I'm going to save it so I can come back to it later.
  24. β€’
I have a friend who won't let me borrow her books because I would "destroy them."
  25. β€’
    Like, what?
  26. β€’
She says that I crack the spines and dog ear pages and write in books.
  27. β€’
    πŸ–
  28. β€’
Um, I think I would take care of your property and handle your books with care if you wanted them to still in be pristine condition. I'm respectful! I'm not a monster!
  29. β€’
I'm not going to return your belongings in a worse condition than when you have them to me. It's the common law of borrowing! I'm not going to write in your books.
  30. β€’
    But to counteract her argument--
  31. β€’
    1) If I go into a used bookstore, I'm going to snatch up that like-new book immediately. Paying half the price for an almost new book rather than paying full price for a new book??? Absolutely!! I'm not crazy.
  32. β€’
But unless I've already heard great things about the book, if I see a used book in pristine condition, I'm going to assume the previous owner didn't like.
  33. β€’
If the spine isn't even cracked, did you open it? Did you even read it?
  34. β€’
Versus seeing a visibly old book with creases in the spine shows me that this book has been loved and read many times and is probably worth the read.
  35. β€’
    2) On dog earring: πŸ˜ΆπŸ˜πŸ˜‘
  36. β€’
Did you know books are made of paper? Do you know paper gets wrinkly? It bends easily? It softens with old age?
  37. β€’
If I mark what page I left off on, it's not as if I'm setting the book on fire and destroying it!
  38. β€’
I'm leaving ONE TINY CREASE in the CORNER of the page!
  39. β€’
It's not even near the text!!!
  40. β€’
When I reread books, I like to see where I left off last time. It's like leaving a faint little trail. It's fun.
  41. β€’
    It's not dangerous!!!!
    πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„
  42. β€’
(Side note: I stopped dog earring pages. I'll mark my spot with a bookmark or a post-it or a receipt or a pencil or my phone or whatever I have lying around.
  43. β€’
But I still support dog earring if that's what you like to do.)
  44. β€’
I don't slam books into a puddle of mud and then jump around on them for my own enjoyment!
  45. β€’
    I read them!!!!!
  46. β€’
    πŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒ
  47. β€’
Twenty years from now when I'm (hopefully) a published author I want to see photos of my books with love marks and underlines and worn down spines in the practice of people reading my books.
  48. β€’
I want to see notes in the margins and capitalized YESes when my readers connect with something.
  49. β€’
I want to see question marks next to something that makes them think.
  50. β€’
I want to see post-its or dog ears next to passages they NEED to return to.
  51. β€’
My books will not be meant to be sitting in a museum, they will be meant to be in the laps of avid readers or maybe even new readers who didn't know they liked to read.
  52. β€’
I want to see water stains from dripping cups and crumbs in the spines because you were eating it during breakfast because you couldn't put it down.
  53. β€’
I want to see the spine broken and worn and soft because you shared it with your friends who curled up on their couch and stretched out and opened it numerous times.
  54. β€’
I want my future books and all current books to be loved and played with.
  55. β€’
Because words are your own, but once the page reaches someone else they are theirs to play with.
  56. β€’
But seriously you should really reconsider your stance on not writing in books because books should not be perfect! Books will not last forever even if you keep them in great condition.
  57. β€’
It's okay if you don't want to write in your books. But it's not okay to be like "I can't stand it when people write in books!!!! 😑😑😑"
πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„ Get over yourself. Like everything, you are entitled to your own opinions but leave everyone else alone. No one has died from writing in a book.
  58. β€’
It's okay to write in books.
