THE FIRST TIME I WAS CALLED NIGGER

Dedicated to @olive @ijeoma @simplyshelli because your most recent lists have struck a nerve 😘
  1. I can't remember my age
But I was very young, probably 5 or 6, just starting school age.
  2. The boy who called me nigger was my neighbor Todd.
I lived in on a dead end street in an apartment/townhouse complex. I was one of the only black kids in the neighborhood.
  3. We were playing and for whatever reason he called me nigger and kept saying it like a chant.
I knew this was something bad, but I had no clue what nigger was. I ran home crying.
  4. I told my mom what happened and she marched right over to Todd's house.
The entire walk over I remember asking her over and over "Mommy, what's a nigger?"
  5. His mom answered the door and all I remember is my mother talking angrily and his mother apologizing profusely.
At this point I was probably over it and ready to start playing again.
  6. Todd never called me nigger again. In fact YEARS later I ran into him and he kinda asked me out??
I politely declined because NEVER FORGET.
  7. (Unfortunately this wasn't the last time I would be called a nigger...)
  8. Two valuable lessons I learned-
Racism is taught. It's not a natural instinct. It was really Todd's parents fault that he heard this language and repeated it. Which is why my mother went straight to the source. So, always go straight to the source...Also, never trust a Todd. 😉
