I'm in charge of choosing the books for a monthly book club. Sometimes my picks don't work for everyone. Here are three that didn't fly, and what went wrong.
  1. The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
    Ce356e17 2c43 4add ae5b d78b3e850334
While the historical New York setting went over well, not everyone could get on board with the magical elements of this story.
  2. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
    C5dd9158 8afc 4d43 ac7d 16045c770d1a
This story of a girl displaced from her family and country by war is exactly the sort of thing my book club normally loves, but not every one could get into the graphic novel format.
  3. Every Day is for the Thief by Teju Cole
    De71420d 8d27 4535 9af6 bf9c70e1ee27
This short novel gives you a great feel for what it might be like to return to your home country after fifteen years away. But it also features a child being brutally murdered by a mob in the early chapters, and more than one book club member couldn't bring themselves to read beyond that point.
