My favorite English words in India.
- •Readymade. The default back home, but certainly not here, where my grandmother commissions purchases (a nose stud, nightgowns) daily.
- •Compulsory. Mahati pointed this out to me; the word that salesmen use when you don't like what they're offering, and they're trying to convince you that it's all the rage. "Madam, sleeves like this are compulsory!"
- •Madam. See above. Said so beautifully.
- •'allo. Not "hello" or "hi". Take the "h" and add an accent for a more casual greeting.
