HOW I BECAME A PROGRAMMER BECAUSE OF POKEMON

  1. 1.
Dad got a family computer when I was 11, around the time when I got addicted to Pokemon
  2. 2.
Started a Yahoo! Club to mingle with other Pokemon fans
  3. 3.
Set up the first version of PokeDream.com as a free Geocities site, built using a drag-and-drop WYSIWYG editor
  4. 4.
Learned HTML from a book I borrowed from the library and rebuilt my site the proper way (still 11)
  5. 5.
Constantly worked on my website all the way up till college. Somehow only managed to use a very small amount of JavaScript and PHP along the way.
  6. 6.
Admitted to UC Berkeley. 60% of my personal statement was about PokeDream
  7. 7.
Had my first exposure to actual programming and computer science in UC Berkeley's 61A: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs when I was 18. Got my ass kicked.
  8. 8.
Built my first web app, a pokedex, after my freshman year while learning PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL during work hours at a completely unrelated full time summer job
  9. 9.
Got an internship at Apple working on an internal web app thanks to my website, pokedex, and my future Cal degree
  10. 10.
Got a job at Facebook building the most popular web app in the world for hundreds of millions of people
  11. 11.
Still at Facebook and still running my Pokemon website :)
