  1. Dad got a family computer when I was 11, around the time when I got addicted to Pokemon
  2. Started a Yahoo! Club to mingle with other Pokemon fans
  3. Set up the first version of PokeDream.com as a free Geocities site, built using a drag-and-drop WYSIWYG editor
  4. Learned HTML from a book I borrowed from the library and rebuilt my site the proper way (still 11)
  5. Constantly worked on my website all the way up till college. Somehow only managed to use a very small amount of JavaScript and PHP along the way.
  6. Admitted to UC Berkeley. 60% of my personal statement was about PokeDream
  7. Had my first exposure to actual programming and computer science in UC Berkeley's 61A: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs when I was 18. Got my ass kicked.
  8. Built my first web app, a pokedex, after my freshman year while learning PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL during work hours at a completely unrelated full time summer job
  9. Got an internship at Apple working on an internal web app thanks to my website, pokedex, and my future Cal degree
  10. Got a job at Facebook building the most popular web app in the world for hundreds of millions of people
  11. Still at Facebook and still running my Pokemon website :)
