    While retelling the plot of a short story about unrequited love: "From the beginning, she tries to go out with him, and he doesn't want to. She's probably ugly. She looks like an old witch."
  2. A silly and sincere question
    Student writing historical fiction: "Ms. Rachel, in Ancient Egypt, did they have phones?" Me: "No, they did not. They would've had to write letters, I guess. Or talk in person." Student: "No, I mean to tell time!"
  3. A profound realization
    While walking to lunch, pondering the Ancients: "You know how we studied Julius Caesar? Well, thousands of years from now, they're going to be studying US!"
